LIRA CITY –In a major breakthrough, North Kyoga police have arrested three suspects in connection with the fatal shooting of Akello Hellen, which occurred on February 24, 2025, at Corner Boroboro in Container Village, Lira City East Division. The incident also left two others injured.
North Kyoga police spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, confirmed the arrests, identifying the suspects as Oyuru Moses (the deceased’s husband), Okello Denis, and Atyang Barbra. During a search of Oyuru Moses’ residence, authorities uncovered counterfeit U.S. dollars amounting to $40,300 and fake Ugandan currency totaling UGX 7.95 million in 50,000-shilling notes. Additionally, fake gold, a gold-weighing scale, and a hedgehog skin were seized. Police are collaborating with the Bank of Uganda and the U.S. Embassy to verify the authenticity of the counterfeit money.
Forensic experts recovered three bullet cartridges and one projectile from the crime scene, which were sent for analysis on February 28. Phones belonging to both the deceased and the suspects were also confiscated to trace communications that could provide further leads.
Atyang Barbra was arrested on March 1, 2025, following allegations that she stole UGX 1.9 million from the deceased after the shooting. A search of her rented house led to the recovery of UGX 220,000 stained with suspected blood, along with the victim’s handbag, keys, and a polythene bag used to bury the items. The bloodstained money has been sent for forensic analysis.
Police are continuing their investigation to locate the alleged murder weapon and track down other suspects who remain at large. SP Okema reiterated the security forces’ commitment to ensuring justice is served.
Lira City Resident Commissioner Lawrence Egole, speaking at Akello Hellen’s burial on March 3 in Anyangapuc Ward, condemned the killing and assured mourners that the perpetrators would face the full force of the law. “We have already arrested three suspects, and no one will escape justice. Security agencies are doing everything to ensure all those responsible are brought to book,” Egole stated.
Local leaders have expressed outrage over the brutal murder and called for swift justice. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward and assist law enforcement in their ongoing investigation.
