Lira, Uganda – In a bid to improve the health and productivity of public servants, Lira City Council has officially launched a physical fitness exercise program aimed at promoting well-being among its workers and residents.
The launch took place earlier today at the Mayor’s Garden and was presided over by Lira City Mayor, Sam Atul.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Atul emphasized the importance of regular physical exercise for both physical and mental health.
“Fitness is good for both the body and the mind. We urge all civil servants and residents to take this seriously,” said Atul.
He also encouraged all city employees to participate in the city’s Monday morning prayers, noting that spiritual wellness complements physical health.
“Let’s put God first. Join us in prayer every Monday so that we start the week with fresh minds and healthy bodies,” he added.
The city’s spokesperson, Robert Okello Ayo, reaffirmed that the initiative is in line with directives from the Ministry of Public Service, which encourage physical activity as part of workplace wellness.
“We are complying with government guidance. From now on, we’ll be holding physical fitness sessions every Tuesday and Thursday,” Okello Ayo announced.
Tom Miira, the Deputy Town Clerk of Lira City, also addressed the gathering, urging all civil servants to embrace the new program.
“This exercise is for your own good. Let’s welcome it and keep ourselves healthy so we can serve better,” Miira said.
The launch marks the beginning of a broader effort by the city to prioritize health and wellness, especially among public sector workers. Regular sessions are expected to be held twice a week at various designated locations across the city.
