OTUKE DISTRICT – The Territorial Police in Otuke District are investigating a tragic incident of murder that has left a rural community in shock, after a 25-year-old man allegedly stabbed his 76-year-old grandfather to death following a dispute over a loan.
The suspect, identified as Ongu Calvin, is in police custody after being apprehended by local community members. The victim is his grandfather, Ongu John.
According to a statement released by the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the incident occurred on Sunday, August 18th, 2025, at approximately 6:00 PM in Teokango village, Anepkide parish, Olilim Sub-County.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the tragedy stemmed from a financial disagreement. The deceased had reportedly acquired a village loan of Shs 500,000 on August 17th. The following evening, his grandson, Calvin, demanded Shs 10,000 from the sum to purchase a new pair of shoes.
"When the deceased refused, a scuffle ensued between the two, and the suspect ended up stubbing his grandfather," SP Okema stated.
The elderly man was rushed to a nearby clinic but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The swift action of the community led to the immediate arrest of Ongu Calvin, who was subsequently handed over to police at Olilim Sub-County police station. The formal report was registered on Monday, August 19th, by a 32-year-old resident of the same village, Owume Francis.
A team of police officers from Otuke Central Police Station visited, processed, and documented the crime scene. A killer knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered and has been entered as an exhibit. Authorities have also recorded relevant statements and conducted a postmortem examination. The body of Ongu John has been released to his relatives for burial rites.
In his statement, SP Okema lamented the disturbing nature of the crime, linking it to a wider societal issue. "It's such a very unfortunate incident, where our youths have developed a character of free things," he said. "We advise young men in the community to get energy to work hard for what they want instead of waiting for free things all the time."
The police have registered a case of murder at Olilim Sub-County Police Station. SP Okema assured the public that the "matter will be investigated to its logical conclusion," after which the police file will be compiled and submitted to the Resident State Attorney (RCSA) for perusal and legal advice ahead of prosecution.
