LIRA, Uganda – In a solemn ceremony held this morning at the Uganda Martyrs Cathedral in Lira, the Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Hon. Sam Engola, officially handed over a Toyota Sienta to Rev. Fr. George Ochieng Olwanda, fulfilling a pledge he made to support the priest's pastoral work and evangelism efforts.
The official handover of the vehicle and its logbook was witnessed by the Bishop of Lira Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, who presided over the ceremony. The event drew congregants, clergy, and government officials who gathered to witness the act of generosity aimed at easing the mobility challenges faced by priests in the region.
Speaking at the handover, Minister Engola emphasized that supporting those who carry the noble responsibility of preaching the Word of God has always been a personal calling for him. He noted that clergymen require reliable transportation to travel freely and effectively to serve communities across the diocese, many of which are in remote areas with poor road networks.
"The work of evangelism is demanding, and our priests cannot be confined to the cathedral walls," Minister Engola stated. "They need to reach the faithful in villages, offer comfort to the sick, and spread the Gospel without the hindrance of mobility challenges. This vehicle is a small contribution to that great mission."
Quoting Scripture, Minister Engola referenced Galatians 6:6, which teaches: "Nevertheless, one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor." He called on the faithful to support their clergy, stressing that investing in God's servants is investing in the spiritual growth of the community.
Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok expressed gratitude to Minister Engola for his continued generosity towards the Church and its leadership. The Bishop prayed for the Minister and his family, blessing the vehicle and praying for Fr. Olwanda's safety as he embarks on his pastoral journeys.
In his response, a visibly emotional Rev. Fr. George Ochieng Olwanda thanked Minister Engola for the timely gift, promising to utilize the vehicle diligently for the advancement of God's work and the service of the people of Lira Diocese.
In a further show of commitment to the clergy, Minister Engola revealed that this is the first of three vehicles he has pledged. He announced that he will be delivering two more vehicles to other priests within the coming week, underscoring his dedication to supporting the Church's mission across the region.
The ceremony concluded with prayers and blessings for the new vehicle, as congregants celebrated the spirit of giving and partnership between the Government, the laity, and the clergy.
