Town Clerk Orders Politicians to Seek Approval Before Fixing Roads in Lira city

Lira City, March 20, 2025– The Town Clerk of Lira City, Okurut Vincent, has issued a stern directive requiring all political leaders and stakeholders to coordinate road rehabilitation and maintenance projects with city authorities before commencement.

In an official letter addressed to Members of Parliament, the Resident City Commissioner, the Mayor, and Division Mayors, Okurut raised concerns over the increasing number of unapproved road interventions by politicians, warning that such actions could lead to substandard work.

“My attention has been drawn to the increasing desire by political leaders and other stakeholders to carry out interventions in the form of road rehabilitation without consultation and technical guidance from city authorities,"the letter read. “This leads to uncoordinated efforts and execution of works without following necessary specifications."

The Town Clerk outlined two key directives that all road projects must be harmonized with city authorities before commencement and Interventions must be carried out only with city approval and under the supervision of the City Engineer.

The letter was copied to the City Engineer and District Police Commanders of Lira Central, Lira City East, and Lira City West to enforce compliance.

Robert Okello Ayo**, spokesperson for Lira City, confirmed the directive, stating that it was issued in good faith to ensure proper planning.

“This will help us know which roads are due for rehabilitation. If a politician does it without our knowledge, the road might already be in our program,"*Okello explained. He urged politicians to work closely with city authorities.

Recent Political Road Works Under Scrutiny

The directive comes after several politicians, including:  Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng(Lira City Woman MP), who rehabilitated roads in Ireda and parts of Lira City East,Vincent Sedrick Obong Eyit(Lira City West MP), who fixed roads in his constituency and Betty Amongi(Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development), who recently worked on a swamp in Omito Ward amid her political ambitions against Dr. Aceng.

As Lira City expands, the Town Clerk’s move is seen as a step toward structured urban development under Uganda’s Vision 2040

Residents and leaders are now expected to comply to avoid wastage of resources and ensure long-term infrastructure quality.
