Kalaki Leaders Embark on Benchmarking Tour to Revive Education Standards at Top-Performing VH Public School

Lira City | June 6, 2025 – In a bid to improve the district’s poor performance in the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), the Kalaki District Education Committee, head teachers, and councilors embarked on a benchmarking tour to VH Public School in Lira City on Friday.

The visit aimed to uncover the strategies behind the school’s consistent academic excellence, as Kalaki continues to lag behind in national examinations.

Jacob Odur, the head teacher of VH Public School, attributed the institution’s outstanding performance to strong parental involvement, disciplined learners, and well-motivated teachers.

“Our success stems from parents’ commitment to education, early preparation by staff, and strict discipline,” Odur explained. “Additionally, Lira City authorities have been very supportive, ensuring a conducive learning environment.”

He further revealed that timely payment of teachers’ incentives plays a crucial role in maintaining focus and dedication among the staff.

Jimmy Okello Omoko, the Lira City East Division Education Officer, challenged parents to prioritize school fees if they expect excellent results from their children.

“Some parents in Kampala pay three million shillings per term for quality education, yet others paying just 10,000 shillings expect first grades,” Okello said. “This mindset must change—education requires investment.”

Ketty Agwang, Kalaki District’s Secretary for Community Services, expressed optimism after the visit, stating that the district would adopt best practices to uplift education standards.

“We have learned a lot today, and as a district, we are committed to ensuring these strategies are implemented to improve performance,” Agwang said.

Established in 1953, VH Public School boasts over 1,400 pupils and has consistently ranked as the best government school in PLE results. Kalaki’s leaders now hope to replicate its success story back home.

With renewed strategies and stakeholder commitment, the district aims to transform its education sector and secure better outcomes in future examinations.
