OTUKE DISTRICT – Saturday, October 11, 2025: In a vibrant display of student democracy, the Otuke District chapter of the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) has elected a new executive committee to steer its affairs for the coming term. The election, held during the Annual General Meeting at Okwang Technical Institute, saw 19 student leaders from various schools participate in a hotly contested poll.
The newly elected leaders were sworn in as the outgoing executive, led by President Mr. Enyang Walter, officially handed over the mantle of leadership.
The UNSA is the umbrella body for all post-primary students in Uganda, with a secretariat in every district to represent student interests.
The newly elected Otuke District UNSA Executive Committee is as follows:
· President: Ojok Daniel (Okwang Secondary School)
· Vice President: Nabilabi Rebecca (Okwang Technical Institute)
· Speaker: Okot Alex (Okwang SS)
· Deputy Speaker: Apiyo Jennifer (Otuke SS)
· General Secretary: Okullo Emmanuel (Otuke SS)
· Assistant General Secretary: Ojuka Joan (Adwari SS)
· Secretary for Finance: Omoding Samuel (Okwang Technical Institute)
· Secretary for Inter-School Affairs: Obua Emmanuel (Adwari SS)
· Secretary for Women Affairs: Locham Sandra Faith (Okwang SS)
· Secretary for Information and Publicity: Ochan Stephen Kizito (Adwari SS)
· Secretary for Persons with Disabilities: Abeja Gloria (Adwari SS)
The election saw strong participation from schools including Ogor SS, Okwang SS, Otuke SS, Adwari SS, and Okwang Technical Institute. However, Orum SS and Mary Asumpta Girls SS were notably absent.
In his first address after the election, the new UNSA District President, Mr. Ojok Daniel, outlined his primary focus. "I will work upon the problem of communication gaps and many other things that were hindering the development of the platform," he stated, signaling a commitment to fostering greater unity and efficiency within the district's student body.
The immediate former President, Mr. Enyang Walter, urged his successors to complete ongoing projects initiated by his administration. He specifically mentioned a tree plantation initiative and the erection of a UNSA signpost. Reflecting on his tenure, Enyang highlighted key achievements, including successful meetings, securing a UNSA office at the district headquarters after petitioning the CAO and DEO, and implementing a debating competition now set to be sponsored by Stanbic Bank.
Guiding the new leaders, Mrs. Janet Atim Arach, the UNSA patron of Okwang SS, reminded them that "leadership is a call from God," advising them to be exemplary and balance their new roles with their academic pursuits.
Echoing the sentiment on academics, Mr. John Kennedy Meri, the District Coordinator, encouraged both outgoing and incoming leaders to concentrate on their studies. "The certificate they are awarded with will not help them as much as the one they are studying for," he cautioned, while also calling for teamwork. Mr. Meri expressed disappointment that Orum SS and Mary Asumpta Girls SS did not attend despite receiving invitations but appreciated the headteachers who supported their students' participation.
The event was capped with advice from the District Education Officer, Madam Lucy Acheng. She urged the new leaders to prioritize regular meetings as a key strategy for strengthening their leadership and effectively representing the students of Otuke District.
With a fresh team at the helm, the students of Otuke District look forward to a period of enhanced advocacy, inter-school collaboration, and dynamic leadership under the UNSA banner.
