From Darkness to Light: 100 Elderly, Visually Impaired Patients See Again After Free Surgeries

ADUKU, Kwania District – One hundred patients who were previously blind or severely visually impaired have regained their sight following a week-long eye surgical camp conducted by the Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH) Eye Unit at Aduku Health Center IV.

The camp, which ran from April 20th to April 24th, 2026, screened over 200 patients and successfully performed 100 surgeries—primarily for cataracts, the leading cause of reversible blindness in Uganda, especially among the elderly. Other conditions treated included glaucoma, infections, and foreign body removal.

Speaking at the closing of the camp on Friday, LRRH Senior Ophthalmologist Dr. Shamin Namwase described the outcome as a major success in bringing specialized care closer to rural communities.

"We are pleased to have successfully conducted 100 surgeries within a single week," Dr. Namwase said. "Bringing these specialized services closer to the community has enabled many individuals—who would otherwise be unable to travel—to access life-changing treatment."

The outreach recorded an overwhelming turnout of over 700 patients from Kwania and neighboring districts, underscoring a critical gap in accessible eye care services in the region. Beyond the 100 surgeries, approximately 500 additional patients received prescription corrective lenses.

Mr. Isaac Ekwan, Clinical Ophthalmology Officer at LRRH and Eye Care Programs Manager with the Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology which supported the camp noted that early post-surgical reviews show excellent recovery outcomes. He added that the team also strengthened local capacity by mentoring staff and upgrading the ophthalmic theatre at Aduku Health Center IV for future use.

"Cataract is not just a health issue—it is a socio-economic challenge, as it significantly limits productivity," Mr. Ekwan said. "Restoring sight restores livelihoods."

Dr. Patrick Ogwal, Senior Medical Officer and In-Charge of Aduku Health Center IV, commended the visiting specialists for their dedication and impact. Beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude, with many saying their restored vision will enable them to resume farming, trade, and independent living.

Despite the success, Dr. Namwase acknowledged that misconceptions and fear of eye surgery persist in some communities. However, she noted that such fears are gradually being dispelled as word of positive outcomes spreads.

This marks the second successful eye surgical camp at Aduku Health Center IV under LRRH, following a similar initiative in 2025. Health officials are now calling for expanded outreach programs and increased staffing of eye care specialists at Health Center IV facilities across the Lira region.
