APAC – Police in Apac District have launched a manhunt for suspects behind the brutal mob murder of a man allegedly caught stealing goats, in the latest incident of vigilante justice to hit the region.
The victim, identified only as Ogwang, a resident of Akuli village in Atopi parish, Apac Sub-County, was killed on June 25, 2026, at Ayeng Trading Center in Ayago parish, Apoi Sub-County. His lifeless body was discovered abandoned on the roadside with a goat still tied to his leg – a chilling signature left by the angry mob.
The incident was reported to police by Adoko Walter, 42, the LC I chairperson of the area.
According to police spokesperson for North Kyoga Region, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the deceased was attacked by residents who accused him of stealing goats. Investigators have established that Ogwang was no stranger to law enforcement.
"It's also alleged that the deceased and others were on several occasions rescued by Police of Apoi Sub-county and Apac CPS over similar allegations of theft of animals," Okema stated. "Records has it that he's among the group of gangs who are always in and out of prison on charges of theft of animals."
A team of officers from Apac Central Police Station and Apoi Sub-county Police Station visited the crime scene, interviewed witnesses, and recorded statements. The body has been conveyed to Apac Main Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
No arrests have been made so far, but police say efforts to identify both the suspects and the owner of the goat recovered as an exhibit are ongoing.
