OYAM, Uganda – The territorial Police in Oyam District have arrested ten suspects, including the school's ICT teacher, security guards, and several students, in connection with the theft of 16 computers worth approximately Shs 40 million from Ngai Secondary School.
The incident occurred in the early hours of August 23, 2026, at around 2:00 AM, when unknown assailants broke into the school's computer laboratory in Barryeko village, Akucha parish.
The theft was discovered that morning at approximately 7:40 AM by the Head Teacher, Mr. Okot Janani, 57, who immediately alerted the ICT teacher, Mr. Olobo Tonny, before reporting the matter to Oyam Police Station.
A case of office breaking and theft was subsequently registered, prompting an immediate and multifaceted investigation. The District Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) processed the scene alongside uniformed police and detectives from Oyam Central Police Station. A canine unit was deployed to track the suspects, and a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) from the school's security system was recovered as a key exhibit.
Following intensive investigations, police apprehended ten individuals who are currently being held for questioning. The police have outlined a comprehensive plan to conclude the investigation. This includes a detailed review of the CCTV footage from the ICT lab, fingerprinting all suspects, and collecting DNA samples for forensic analysis.
Investigators will also conduct interviews with the suspects, the service providers responsible for the school's camera system, and the technicians who installed the computers to determine the full extent of the conspiracy.
"We are currently investigating the level of involvement of the students in this alleged crime," said SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Police Spokesperson for the North Kyoga Region. "Our team is working diligently to recover the stolen property and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice."
The suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
