LIRA CITY – As the next election approaches, a wave of optimism is sweeping through Lira City West Division, with residents and party faithful looking to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, Eddy Morris Ogweng, to provide the articulate and effective representation they argue has been sorely lacking.
For years, the development burden in Lira City has largely fallen on the shoulders of Woman MP and Health Minister, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, who has been the sole voice championing progress in health, education, and poverty alleviation. In stark contrast, the current MP for Lira City West, Hon. Vincent Sedrick Obong Eyit, has faced criticism for his inability to bring tangible development to the division and for his notable silence on the floor of Parliament.
This perceived leadership vacuum has created a clear demand for change. Into this gap steps Eddy Morris Ogweng, the NRM's freshly elected flag bearer, who is being hailed as the embodiment of a new, high-quality leader for the constituency.
A Unifier and Articulate Advocate
Supporters point to Ogweng’s vocal nature and his ability to articulate issues without bias as key assets. Described as intelligent, smart, and humble, Ogweng brings a deep connection to the global stage, which many believe will be instrumental in attracting development opportunities.
"By sending him to Parliament, it will ease the work of Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng and more development will come to Lira City," said one local NRM leader, echoing a common sentiment.
Demonstrating his commitment to inclusive leadership, Ogweng has begun his campaign by uniting previously fractured NRM leaders within Lira City West, assuring them they will be the central connecting point in his grassroots mobilization efforts.
Who is Eddy Morris Ogweng?
Eddy Morris Ogweng is not a typical political newcomer. He recently secured a decisive victory in the NRM primary election, winning a two-man race with an impressive 75.28% of the vote, defeating Dr. Moses Ogonya.
His victory was driven by his reputation as a known mobilizer with a strong desire to create cohesion among party members and build a stronger support base at the grassroots. Following his win, Ogweng emphasized his commitment to "revitalize the structures and ensure effective grassroots mobilization," ensuring that party members are "active participants in the NRM’s development programs."
A Distinguished Global Career with Local Impact
Beyond politics, Ogweng’s profile is that of a distinguished international development professional with over 13 years of experience across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. His career has been focused on International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid, and Rural Reconstruction.
His academic credentials are globally recognized, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Community Psychology from Makerere University, and Master's degrees in International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, and International Development from institutions in Spain and Uganda. He also earned an International Certificate in Mental Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Fordham University in New York.
Professionally, he has served with organizations like Food for the Hungry International and the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, and has consulted for various government agencies.
Perhaps most relatable to his constituents are his achievements as a passionate entrepreneur and community leader. He is the founder of The Odwar Fund and Smart Agricultural Solutions, initiatives that have directly impacted livelihoods. His work has earned him prestigious accolades, including:
· Uganda’s Best Farmer 2015 (awarded by the Netherlands Embassy)
· Uganda’s Best Young Employer 2017 (awarded by the Federation of Uganda Employers and ILO)
· Recognition among Uganda’s Top 40 Men under 40
As the permanent representative of the Lango Community in North America, Ogweng has been a key advocate for his people on a global scale and has hosted prominent figures, including President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
With this rare blend of global exposure, proven grassroots impact, and a clear vision for unity, Eddy Morris Ogweng presents himself as the candidate who can bridge the gap between Lira City West and the national development agenda, finally giving the division a strong, vocal, and effective partner in Parliament.
