Three Female Journalists from Lango Eye Parliament Seats, Vow Change

Lira, April 24, 2025 – Three female journalists from the Lango sub-region have officially announced their intentions to contest for Women Member of Parliament seats in the upcoming 2026 general elections, promising to bring new energy and solutions to longstanding challenges in their constituencies.

Patricia Aceng Ogwang, a journalist with Voice of Lango FM, publicly declared her bid for the Lira City Woman MP seat on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Pacific Grand Hotel. She will face stiff competition, including Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, in the NRM primaries.

Aceng outlined her three key visions for Lira City: economic empowerment, reducing business taxes, and rehabilitating street children.

“Many people in Lira City are economically vulnerable. If elected, I will fight poverty by supporting small businesses and creating opportunities,"she said. She also vowed to advocate for tax relief for struggling entrepreneurs and address the growing issue of street children by establishing a rehabilitation center.

Despite competing against seasoned politicians like Dr. Aceng and Gender Minister Betty Amongi, Aceng expressed confidence, stating, lI am not scared of them. They have done their part, and I will build on their work with fresh ideas because I am capable and sharp-minded."

Meanwhile, Finella Akullo Opio, a journalist at Radio Unity, declared her intention to contest for the Kwania District Woman MP seat. She accused the incumbent of failing to represent the people’s concerns in Parliament.

“It’s time Kwania’s voice is heard. Our current MP has not taken our problems to Parliament. I will be a problem-solver,"Akullo stated, confirming she will run on the NRM ticket.

Another journalist, Peace Bridget Apio from Voice of Lango, announced her bid for the Kole District Woman MP seat, hoping to unseat incumbent Judith Alyek.

Apio highlighted the plight of young girls impregnated during the COVID-19 lockdown, accusing leaders of neglect. “Many young mothers were abandoned, yet no leader is fighting for them. Some MPs have never returned to their voters since 2021. I am coming to change that," she said.

The entry of these journalists into politics signals a growing trend of media professionals transitioning into leadership roles, driven by a desire for accountability and grassroots-driven change. With their campaigns centered on economic empowerment, youth welfare, and better representation, the 2026 elections in Lango could see a major shift in political dynamics.

As the race heats up, voters will be watching closely to see if these newcomers can unseat the established political figures.
