Oyam Horror: Decomposing Beheaded Body Found as Escaped Murder Suspect Is Killed and beheaded by Mob

Oyam District, Uganda – Police in North Kyoga Region are investigating a grim sequence of events that has left two men dead—one beheaded and another lynched by a mob—in a case that has exposed the dangerous intersection of vigilantism and unresolved crime in Oyam District.

The nightmare began on the night of July 5, 2026, when Okello Walter, a resident of Otada "B" Village, Kulabura Parish, Minakulu Sub-county, disappeared from his home. According to police, no report of his disappearance was ever filed by his relatives. For three agonizing days, his whereabouts remained unknown.

That changed on July 8, 2026, at approximately 1:20 p.m., when the Officer in Charge of Minakulu Sub-County Police Station received a chilling tip from a concerned citizen: the decomposing, beheaded body of an unidentified male adult had been discovered in a maize garden belonging to Ajera at Ajaga Trading Centre.

A police team rushed to the scene. With the assistance of the deceased's father—who had been informed while visiting his daughter-in-law at Atapara Hospital—the body was positively identified as that of Okello Walter.

Preliminary investigations suggest that on the very night of his disappearance, the deceased had been involved in a violent altercation at a bar owned by Ayo Alex and Apio Christine at Ajaga Trading Centre. The suspects in the brawl were identified as Onegi Geoffrey, Ogwang Ronald, and another individual also named Okello Walter. Following the fight, the victim vanished—only to be discovered lifeless days later.

Police registered a case of Murder by Hacking and quickly moved to arrest four suspects: Onegi Geoffrey, Ogwang Ronald, Okello Walter, and Apio Christine. Statements were recorded, and the crime scene was processed and documented by the Scene of Crime Officer under the command of the District Police Commander. The body was conveyed to Anyeke Health Centre IV Mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

While being escorted to Minakulu Sub-County Police Station, suspect Onegi Geoffrey allegedly escaped from lawful custody. He was pursued by members of the public, who apprehended him and lynched him on the spot. His body has also been taken to Anyeke Health Centre IV Mortuary for a postmortem.

The double death has left the community in shock and police grappling with two parallel investigations—one into the brutal killing of Okello Walter, and another into the mob action that claimed the life of a suspect who had not yet faced trial.

Regional Police Spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema strongly condemned the act of mob action, warning that vigilantism undermines the rule of law and denies suspects their constitutional right to a fair trial.

"Members of the public are urged to always hand suspects over to the Police for lawful investigation and prosecution," Okema stated.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the murder of Okello Walter, identify all those responsible, and determine the motive behind the killing. Police have also launched a manhunt for any other individuals who participated in the lynching of Onegi Geoffrey.

As the bodies lie in the mortuary awaiting postmortem, the community of Oyam is left to reckon with a violent cycle of crime and revenge that has claimed two lives in a matter of days.
