LIRA CITY — June 20, 2025
The recently concluded NRM elections for General Secretary in Lira City have been thrown into turmoil following a formal petition submitted by Mr. Winstone Ogwang, one of the candidates, seeking the nullification of Mr. Ongom Morris Chris’s declaration as winner.
In a letter dated 17th June 2025 addressed to the Chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission, Ogwang contends that Ongom was wrongly declared winner despite not being a registered member of the NRM party—a critical requirement for eligibility under the NRM Election Guidelines.
“It has come to my attention that Mr. Ongom Morris Chris is not a registered member or voter of the NRM Party,” Ogwang wrote, further alleging that this disqualification was overlooked during the electoral process. He also referenced an earlier incident in which Ongom’s attempt to express interest for the NRM Mayoral Flagbearer post was rejected due to non-verification in the NRM membership database, despite paying for the form.
Citing this, Ogwang has formally requested the immediate nullification of Ongom’s declaration, and declaring him as the duly elected General Secretary, being the only eligible candidate, and appropriate remedies deemed fit by the NRM Electoral Commission.
In response, Mr. Ongom Morris Chris downplayed the petition, saying that if Ogwang was looking for the position, “he should have simply come to me.” Ongom added that he is not shaken by the complaint, noting that the matter is already before the NRM top leadership and he will wait for their final judgment.
The petition also has been copied to NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, the Director of Legal Affairs, and the Administrative Secretary for NRM Lira City, indicating the seriousness of the internal party dispute. As the NRM leadership deliberates on the matter, the case underscores rising tensions in local party structures ahead of the 2026 general elections.
