Lira District – Major (Rtd) Emmy Johnson Opio, the Secretary for Publicity of the NRM Veterans League, has called on veterans to take a leading role in championing development and eradicating poverty within their communities.

Maj. (Rtd) Opio was speaking during a meeting with NRM veterans’ leaders  of Erute South in Amach Town Council, Lira District, where he emphasized that veterans, having served the country diligently, have a duty to spearhead positive change in society.

“Veterans must come out with new ideas to fight poverty and promote community development. We cannot sit back. It is our responsibility to lead the way in transforming Lango,” Opio said.

He revealed his vision of promoting cocoa farming in Lira District as one of the key strategies to boost household incomes and reduce poverty. He urged fellow veterans to embrace agriculture as a tool for economic empowerment.

Opio also encouraged veterans to remain united and support President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, stressing that veterans must not oppose the ruling government.

Lira District Vice Chairperson for Veterans, Johnson Omara Adukule, echoed the call, saying unity among veterans was vital in the fight against poverty.

“As veterans, we must work together. Any veteran aligning with the opposition will not benefit from the government’s development programs,” Omara said.

Meanwhile, Michael Peter Odongo, the NRM Veterans Chairperson for Amach Town Council, expressed concerns that veterans had not been benefiting fully from government initiatives, but pledged continued mobilization for both development and political support.

The meeting resolved to strengthen unity among veterans in Lango, prioritize poverty eradication, forming veterans Saccos and cooperatives and actively participate in mobilizing communities for government programs.
