James Ocen (Agipi) Beats Four Rivals to Win UPC Flag for Lira City East MP Contest

Lira City – August 17,2025 — The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has officially declared James Ocen, popularly known as Agipi, as its flag bearer for the Lira City East Division Member of Parliament seat in the upcoming 2026 general elections.


This follows internal party elections held yesterday across different parts of the country to select UPC candidates for various positions. In Lira City East, Ocen Agipi emerged victorious in a hotly contested race involving five aspirants.


Agipi garnered a commanding 880 votes, decisively beating his closest rival Mike Omonya, who collected 209 votes. Other candidates included George Okello Ayo with 92 votesIsaac Apenyo with 64 votes, and Janet Rita Apolo, who trailed with 18 votes.


The UPC Electoral Commission Chairperson, Hajji Mahmoud Kazimbiraine, announced Ocen Agipi as the party’s official candidate, commending the transparency of the electoral process and the enthusiasm shown by party members in the division.


In his victory speech, Agipi thanked his supporters and pledged to deliver victory in the 2026 general elections. “I am ready and equipped with all the qualities and tools needed to lead Lira City East to greater heights. The people have shown confidence in me, and I will not disappoint,” he said.


He called on all residents of Lira City East to support his bid for Parliament, promising inclusive leadership and sustainable development for the division.


The UPC leadership in the region expressed optimism that with Agipi on the ticket, the party stands a strong chance of reclaiming the Lira City East seat in 2026.
