Christine Akite: Women Are Everyday Heroes—Let’s End Gender Violence

LIRA, June 9, 2025 — As Uganda marks Heroes Day, Christine Akite, Chairperson of the NRM Women’s League in Lira District, has called on both men and women to unite in the fight against gender-based violence, emphasizing the importance of respect, equality, and recognizing everyday heroes in communities.

Speaking at a community event in Agweng Sub-county, Akite reminded the public that women often endure the heaviest burdens in society — emotionally, economically, and physically — yet continue to rise and serve their families and the nation with unwavering strength.

“Women are heroes every single day,” Akite said. “They suffer in all ways—raising families, working hard, facing violence and inequality. It is time we stop suppressing them and start honoring their contribution.”

Akite, who has declared her intention to contest as Agweng Sub-county Councilor to the Lira District Council, used the occasion to advocate for peace in homes and communities. She stressed that eliminating gender-based violence is not just a women’s issue but a collective responsibility.

“Celebrating Heroes Day means acknowledging the courage and sacrifice of all people — including the women and mothers whose heroism often goes unnoticed,” she added.

She also rallied the youth, urging them not to neglect their roots.

“Do not forget your parents,” she told them. “They are your first heroes, and their sacrifices deserve your respect and gratitude.”

Akite’s speech resonated with many in attendance, especially women and youth groups who pledged to promote harmony and respect in their families. As Uganda honors its national heroes, Akite’s message was a powerful reminder that heroism starts at home — and that equality, peace, and respect are foundations worth celebrating.
