Woman Fakes Pregnancy, Steals Cousin’s Newborn to Deceive Husband,Arrested in Soroti

KAMPALA, Uganda – Police at Jinja Road Division have safely recovered a three-month-old baby boy who was reported stolen from his home in Kireka, in a case that has exposed an elaborate deception involving a faked pregnancy.

The infant was taken on May 5, 2026, from Kireka D Cell, Kireka Ward, Namugongo Division, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District. Following a coordinated police operation, the suspect, identified as Amongin Brenda, was tracked and arrested in Soroti District. The baby was found unharmed.

According to police reports, Amongin Brenda had visited the home of her cousin, Akunyo Sarah—the baby’s mother—on May 4, 2026. She told family members she had traveled from Kalaki District to process her National ID under express service.

The following day, at around 2:00 PM, the mother briefly stepped outside, leaving the baby asleep inside the house. When she returned, both the child and her cousin were gone.

Preliminary investigations have uncovered a startling motive. Police say Amongin Brenda had allegedly been misleading her husband into believing she was pregnant. On May 2, 2026, just days before the theft, she reportedly asked him for money, claiming she needed to go to the hospital to deliver.

“The suspect is currently in custody and will face charges accordingly,” a police statement from Jinja Road Division confirmed. “Efforts are ongoing to reunite the baby with the family.”

Authorities have praised the swift action that led to the arrest and recovery, and have reminded the public to remain vigilant about who they allow into their homes, especially around young children.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon on charges of child stealing, which carries a significant penalty under Ugandan law.
