BREAKING: Mother, Child Trapped Under Overturned Trailer in Oyam – Police Spokesperson Okema Confirms

OYAM DISTRICT, Uganda – The territorial Police in Oyam District have launched investigations into a fatal road accident that occurred early this morning, July 1st, 2026, along the busy Lira-Kamdini highway.


According to a statement issued by SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, the incident happened at approximately 7:30 AM at Kamdini, near the URA checkpoint.


The accident involved a Mercedes Benz semi-trailer (Reg. No. KDJ001D/ZD9275), yellow and blue in colour, which was being driven by Mwendwa Komu, a Kenyan national residing in Nairobi. The trailer was traveling from Lira towards Kamdini when the driver allegedly knocked an unknown cement truck from the rear, lost control, and veered into the opposite lane.


In the process, the trailer knocked a pedal cyclist, identified as Adero Miriam, 24, a resident of Pida village, Pukucha parish, Kamdini Sub-County. She was carrying her young child, Angwen Miriam, on the bicycle at the time of the crash. The trailer then plunged into a trench and overturned onto its right side.


SP Okema confirmed that both the mother and her child are suspected to be trapped beneath the heavy container. "Only the bicycle and her belongings can be seen at this time," the statement read. Efforts to recover the trapped victims are ongoing, with a heavy crane expected at the scene to lift the wreckage.


The driver, Mr. Komu, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to St. John's Hospital Aber, where he is currently receiving treatment.


The trailer was also carrying several passengers, all residents of Kiryadongo, who were onboard at the time of the accident. They have been identified as:Nasimiyu Rose, 40, Ogape Nicholas, 54,Nasimiyu Betty, 21,Felister Nelly, 29,Nandera Aisha, 3,and Nekesa Christine, 1½


The condition of the passengers remains unclear, though they were listed among the victims in the police report.


The scene was visited by ASP Ochwo Apollo, the District Traffic Officer, and Cpl Okongo Joachim. The vehicle remains at the scene pending recovery by a heavy breakdown crane.


SP Okema noted that the exact cause of the accident is yet to be established, and investigations are actively ongoing. He urged motorists to exercise caution along the Kamdini stretch and to adhere to speed limits, especially near checkpoints.
