AMOLATAR, UGANDA – The territorial Police in Amolatar District have arrested the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) District Chairperson, Mr. Olwit Kamilo, following allegations of financial mismanagement involving funds meant for the party's LCI flag bearer elections.
Mr. Kamilo was taken into custody from his residence in Inomo Cell, Inomo Ward, Amolatar Town Council, on July 21, 2026. His arrest comes after complaints were lodged at the Amolatar Central Police Station alleging that he distributed Shs. 50,000 to beneficiaries instead of the mandatory Shs. 100,000.
According to police reports, the funds were intended to facilitate LCI flag bearer elections across all 16 Sub-Counties in the district, as well as for women councilors participating in the party primary elections.
The North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, confirmed the arrest and stated that a General Enquiry File (No. 038/2026) has been opened to investigate the allegations.
"Preliminary findings indicate that the NRM funds were distributed country-wide, and a circular detailing how the funds should be spent was published across all districts in Uganda," SP Okema said in a statement.
He added that while investigators have already recorded statements from some members who allegedly received lesser amounts, others are expected to record their accounts as the probe continues. Mr. Kamilo is currently being held at Amolatar Central Police Station.
The police have warned that once the investigation is complete, the case file will be submitted to the Resident State Attorney for perusal and legal guidance.
In a stern warning to leaders across the political spectrum, SP Okema urged them to "respect and practice tolerance while conducting their duties," emphasizing the need for transparency and adherence to party guidelines during the ongoing electoral processes.
