Dokolo, Uganda — A total of 226 candidates have successfully passed the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) recruitment exercise in the Lango sub-region, following a rigorous screening process held at Dokolo District Headquarters. The recruitment, which drew hundreds of hopefuls from four districts—Dokolo, Kalaki, Kaberamaido, and Amolatar—was marked by both success and controversy.
While the majority of candidates followed the proper procedures, several were disqualified due to forged documents and other irregularities. In a particularly notable incident, Obonya Amos from Amolatar District was arrested after allegedly attempting to bribe an instructor with Shs. 85,000 to secure a spot on the list. Authorities confirmed he was not among those officially shortlisted.
Despite such challenges, the recruitment was praised for its transparency. Dokolo Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mrs. Akech Barbra, congratulated the successful applicants and commended the new centralized shortlisting system managed from Kampala.
“I encourage you not to be discouraged if you are not selected today. Recruitment happens annually, and as long as you are within the age bracket, you can reapply,” said Mrs. Akech. “If you are beyond the age limit, there are professional entry routes after acquiring the necessary qualifications.”
She urged the selected candidates to maintain discipline, noting that the UPDF is a force that values order and obedience.
Kalaki Deputy RDC, Mr. Opio Patrick Bosco, echoed similar sentiments, reminding recruits of the values the army upholds.
“The UPDF is a professional institution that demands patriotism and commitment. Your skills and professions will be valued and you will be deployed accordingly. Love Uganda, love yourself, and love one another,” Mr. Opio said.
District Recruitment Results:
• Kaberamaido District: 48 out of 73 shortlisted qualified (46 male, 2 female).
• Kalaki District: 66 out of 102 passed (61 male, 4 female, 1 male professional).
• Dokolo District: 62 out of 93 passed (52 male, 1 female, and 9 professionals—8 male, 1 female).
• Amolatar District: 50 out of 94 passed (46 male, 2 female, 2 male professionals).
The exercise, part of the national annual recruitment drive, emphasizes professionalism, discipline, and transparency, with local leaders calling on both successful and unsuccessful candidates to remain hopeful and patriotic.
