Uganda Intensifies Preparations for AU Peace and Security Council Chairmanship in July 2026

Uganda has taken another significant step in strengthening its role within the African Union following a high-level meeting between Ambassador Rebecca Amuge Otengo, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, and Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security.

In a statement shared after the meeting, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye expressed his pleasure at receiving Ambassador Otengo, noting that the discussions focused on preparations for Uganda’s upcoming chairmanship of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) in July 2026.

The deliberations centered on key priorities and strategic areas of cooperation as Uganda prepares to assume the important leadership role. The chairmanship will provide Uganda with an opportunity to contribute to continental efforts aimed at promoting peace, security, stability, and conflict prevention across Africa.

Uganda’s assumption of the AUPSC chairmanship reflects the country’s continued engagement in regional and continental peace-building initiatives. It also underscores the confidence placed in Uganda by fellow African Union member states to help guide discussions on some of the continent’s most pressing peace and security challenges.

The meeting between Ambassador Otengo and Ambassador Adeoye signals the beginning of intensive preparations to ensure a successful and impactful tenure when Uganda takes over the chairmanship in July 2026.
