Otuke, Uganda – In a major political development, Tonny Opio Opio, who had earlier declared interest in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries for Otuke County, has announced his decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Speaking to karumapost on Tuesday morning,Opio said his decision was informed by the need to offer leadership that transcends party divisions. “I have realized that Otuke Constituency needs a leader, not a party,” Opio stated. “The issue of political parties is fragmenting our people instead of uniting them. I want to bridge that gap.”
Opio emphasized that his new path is about servant leadership and inclusivity. “I have therefore decided to offer servant leadership as a unifying factor. I will bring everyone on board so that we can focus on the development agenda of Otuke.”
He added that his leadership will be grounded in collaboration and open to all, regardless of political affiliation. “I will be there to serve all people of Otuke—regardless of party. I’m ready to work with everyone who wants to move our constituency forward.”
Opio’s declaration has stirred political debate in the district, with many residents and political observers saying his decision could significantly reshape the race in Otuke County.
His message of unity and development-focused leadership has already begun drawing attention, especially among the youth and undecided voters, who are increasingly calling for less divisive politics in the region.
The Otuke County seat is expected to attract several contenders, but Tonny Opio’s shift to an independent ticket positions him as a formidable force in the coming elections.
