Suspect Faces Death Penalty After Arrest for Alleged Aggravated Defilement of Minor in Lira


Lira City, Uganda | 30th July 2025 – The Territorial Police in Lira City East Division have confirmed the arrest of a 22-year-old man in connection with the aggravated defilement of a five-year-old girl, sending shockwaves through the community.


According to a press statement issued by North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, on July 29th, the horrific incident occurred on the evening of Monday, July 28th, 2025. Preliminary investigations indicate that the young victim, a pupil in top class at a local nursery school, was allegedly lured from her home in Lira City East Division.


"The victim was reportedly dragged into a nearby bush by the suspect," stated SP Okema. The suspect has been identified as Odyek Brian, a resident of Agwentangwet “B” Cell, Ngetta Ward, within Lira City East Division.


Police acted swiftly following the incident. Odyek Brian was apprehended and is currently being held in custody at the Lira City East Division Police Headquarters as intensive investigations proceed.


"The victim has undergone a medical examination and is currently receiving Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) as well as psychosocial support," SP Okema confirmed, emphasizing the priority placed on the child's wellbeing. 

He added that further inquiries are actively underway to compile a robust case file for submission to the Resident State Attorney (RCSA) for legal guidance and prosecution.


In the strongest terms, the police condemned the attack. "We strongly condemn this horrific act against a vulnerable child," SP Okema declared, "and reaffirm our commitment to pursuing justice without fear or favor." He highlighted ongoing collaboration with community stakeholders, local leaders, and child protection agencies to ensure both the victim's continued welfare and the expeditious prosecution of the perpetrator.


The police issued a crucial appeal to the public. "We urge parents, guardians, and the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement or conduct involving minors immediately," SP Okema stressed. "Let us all take collective responsibility in protecting our children from harm."


Odyek Brian faces a charge of Aggravated Defilement. SP Okema reiterated the gravity of this charge, noting that upon conviction, it carries a maximum sentence of death under Ugandan law.


The police expressed appreciation for the local community's cooperation, which facilitated the swift arrest of the suspect. "We appreciate the cooperation of the local community in providing timely information," SP Okema said. The public will be updated as the investigation progresses.
