Strangers Turn Heroes: American Well-Wishers Fund Surgery for Shooting Victim Mercy Auma

Lira, Uganda – May 5, 2025 - Mercy Auma, a young woman left fighting for her life after a brutal shooting at a pork joint in Lira City, has finally received a life-saving surgery, thanks to the generosity of well-wishers from America.

On February 24, 2025, unknown assailants on a motorcycle opened fire at the Container Pork Joint near Corner Boroboro Center, Lira City East Division. The attack claimed the life of Hellen Akello, the pork joint owner, while two others, including Mercy Auma, were seriously injured.

Auma sustained a gunshot wound to her leg, leaving a bullet lodged deep in her tissue. With no means to afford surgery, her situation grew dire—until help came from an unexpected place.

Alex Atim, a Ugandan living in America, mobilized friends and donors to raise funds for Auma’s operation. Their efforts paid off when, on May 5, 2025, Dr. Solomon Atyam, an orthopedic surgeon, successfully removed the bullet from Auma’s leg at Lira Prosthetics Center (LPC) Hospital.

“This good gesture is a result of unity among people who value humanity,” Atim said, expressing gratitude to all who contributed. Eddy Morris Ogweng, who facilitated Auma’s transfer to LPC Hospital, also thanked the donors for their support.

Dr. Atyam confirmed that the surgery went well, though Auma will need time to heal. “She should start feeling better in six to eight weeks and may walk with a stick initially. After twelve weeks, she should walk freely,” he explained. He also emphasized the importance of a protein and calcium-rich diet, recommending milk and silver fish to speed up her recovery.

Mercy Auma’s story is a testament to the power of collective kindness—a reminder that even in the darkest moments, humanity’s light can shine through.
