LIRA CITY – Christians from across various congregations gathered in large numbers at St. Luke Ojwina Church of Uganda over the weekend, raising a remarkable Shs 48,124,600 during a fundraising event aimed at supporting the construction of a new church building.
The colourful ceremony was graced by former Lira City Mayor, Mike Ogwang Olwa Veve, who served as the chief guest. Ogwang Veve commended the Christian community for their unwavering generosity and unity in supporting the house of God.
“I want to thank each and every one of you for the spirit of giving. Building the church is not just about bricks and mortar—it is about building faith, hope, and community,” Ogwang Veve remarked to loud applause.
While addressing the congregation, Ogwang Veve also hinted at a political comeback, stating that he would be seeking a return to the mayoral seat of Lira City in 2026. He noted that he had only taken a political rest after losing to current mayor Sam Atul in the 2021 elections.
“I’m not done with serving the people of Lira. I just took a rest, and come 2026, I will be back in the race for Mayor,” he declared.
Hassan Obong, the chairperson of the St. Luke Ojwina Christian community, extended heartfelt thanks to all contributors. “We are truly grateful to everyone who gave generously to support this noble cause. Your contributions will go a long way in shaping the spiritual future of this church,” he said.
The successful fundraiser demonstrated the deep commitment of the Christian community in Ojwina and beyond toward the growth of the church, with plans now underway to begin the next phase of construction.
