Makindye – A police officer attached to Nsangi Police Station has been charged with destroying evidence and conspiring to obstruct the course of justice in a high-profile case involving disputed land and alleged corruption within the force.
Detective Sergeant Protasi Ngabirano was on Thursday arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Makindye following a joint investigation by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit ,the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions
The charges stem from a January 2025 incident in which Sgt. Ngabirano, together with other individuals still at large, allegedly conspired to frame Richard Sewanonda in a case of aggravated robbery.
Prosecution told the court that the officer deliberately removed a crucial witness statement from an official police file at Katwe Police Station in Makindye Division, Kampala District. He is accused of replacing the original testimony with a fabricated statement aimed at implicating Sewanonda.
Investigators allege that Sgt. Ngabirano was colluding with other parties seeking to unlawfully dispose of Sewanonda’s land while the latter remained in prison. The manipulation of evidence, authorities believe, was designed to weaken Sewanonda’s legal position and facilitate the land transaction.
The court heard that the conspiracy posed a serious threat to justice and undermined public confidence in the police.
Ngabirano was remanded as investigations continue. Authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to track down his alleged accomplices.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit has reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out impunity within law enforcement and called on the public to report similar acts of misconduct.
