LIRA, UGANDA – November 2, 2025 – The Territorial Police in the North Kyoga Region have arrested three individuals for allegedly attempting to bribe a Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) scout in a bold move to undermine the ongoing Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
The suspects have been identified as Odongo George, Ekut Simon (32), and Awoko Lavoiser (26). They were apprehended on Sunday at Garden Hotel in Lira City after a failed attempt to corrupt Ayoo Christine, a UNEB official assigned to oversee examinations in Oyam District.
According to police, the trio offered Ayoo a bribe of One Million Uganda Shillings (UGX 1,000,000), paid in denominations of UGX 50,000 notes, to influence the conduct of the national exams. The PLE had officially commenced just days prior, on October 31st, with the briefing of candidates.
Acting on a tip-off, police officers conducted a swift operation, arresting the suspects at the hotel. The alleged bribe money was recovered and has been exhibited as key evidence in the case.
The case is now registered at Lira City Central Division Police Station under reference SD... as investigations continue. Police confirmed that upon the conclusion of the investigations, the suspects will be arraigned in court to face charges.
In a stern warning, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, emphasized the force's zero-tolerance stance towards examination malpractice.
“The Police, working closely with UNEB, will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone attempting to compromise the credibility of national examinations,” SP Okema stated. “The long and indomitable arm of the law will firmly reach out to all offenders.”
The Uganda Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of national examinations, ensuring a fair and just process for all candidates across the country. The public and all persons involved in UNEB activities have been cautioned against engaging in any form of malpractice.
