KOLE DISTRICT, Uganda – A fatal road accident on the Lira–Kamdini Highway has claimed the lives of three people, all occupants of a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, after a head-on collision with a Nissan Patrol whose driver reportedly fled the scene, police have confirmed.
The crash happened at around 7:10 pm on Tuesday, 19th May 2026, at the Kulu Yago area in Kole District.
According to preliminary police findings, the Nissan Patrol, registration number UA 049CV, was travelling from Lira towards Kamdini when it collided head-on with the motorcycle, registration number UFV 110A, which was heading from Kamdini towards Lira carrying three people.
“All the three occupants of the motorcycle reportedly died on the spot,” said SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, Police Spokesperson for North Kyoga Region. Their identities have not yet been established.
The driver of the Nissan Patrol allegedly abandoned the vehicle and ran away immediately after the accident. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect and are appealing to him to surrender voluntarily.
“We call upon the driver involved in the accident to voluntarily report to the nearest police station to assist with investigations,” Okema said.
The District Traffic Officer for Kole, IP Tootika Wilson, visited the scene alongside other officers. The three bodies were retrieved and taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination. Both vehicles have been towed to Kole Central Police Station, where they will be inspected by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). A sketch map of the crash scene has been drawn as part of ongoing inquiries.
Police have urged all road users to exercise maximum caution, obey traffic rules, and avoid reckless driving – particularly at night.
“We extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” Okema added. “Investigations will be conducted thoroughly to ensure justice is served.”
Anyone with information about the fleeing driver is asked to contact the nearest police station.
