Oyam, Uganda – May 25, 2024 – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party elections in Oyam and other parts of Lango sub-region proceeded smoothly on Friday, May 23, despite isolated incidents of disputes and cancellations in some districts.
While elections in Amolatar and Lira districts were postponed due to allegations of voter bribery and irregularities, Oyam’s polls were largely peaceful. Moses Okello, the NRM registrar for Lira, confirmed that the suspended elections would be held on May 27.
However, tensions flared in Oyam when Okello Engola Junior, an aspirant for district chairperson, rejected the results after losing to Bosco Onyik Ogwal. Engola, who garnered 192 votes against Ogwal’s 271, accused Willie Omodo Omodo of influencing his defeat and demanded a cancellation. His petition was dismissed, and the election proceeded as planned.
Meanwhile, Billie Otto emerged as the new publicity secretary, defeating incumbent Philip Ogile Jakayo and Bismarck Isaac Olang. Morris Michael Odongo was also elected as the new PWDs publicity secretary, pledging to serve with "dedication, transparency, and accountability."
Opito Moses, a 2026 Oyam South MP aspirant under the NRM, commended delegates and security forces for ensuring a smooth electoral process. Speaking to Karumapost,he urged aggrieved candidates to follow legal channels for redress.
“To the new NRM leaders of Oyam district, I am ready to work with you to develop our constituency and Lango,” Opito said.
“For those unhappy with the outcomes, let’s follow the right procedures as per the NRM constitution. Now is the time for Lango to rise.”
Opito, who provided 42 cartons of mineral water for the event, also praised NRM leaders like Bonny Amoki for their contributions. He reiterated his call for unity and continued mobilization to strengthen the party’s grassroots support.
As Lango prepares for the rescheduled elections in Amolatar and Lira, NRM leaders remain optimistic about fostering cohesion and development in the sub-region.
