Lira City, Uganda – In a shocking turn of events, nine individuals have been charged in connection with the brutal murder and aggravated robbery of Dr. Olila Wilfred, a prominent figure in the community. The suspects, who include a businessman, a student, and an industrial engineer, were arraigned before Lira Magistrate Sulvie Kampire and remanded until April 16, 2025.
The accused, identified as Okello Joel George, Kalama Steven, Mwesigwa Geoffrey, Okabo Joseph, Okello Andrew, Mugerwa Paul, Kawuki Athanasius, Itonge Alex, and Meya Richard, are alleged to have committed the heinous crimes on January 17, 2025, at Senior Quarters (A) cell in Lira City East Division. Dr. Wilfred was reportedly murdered during an aggravated robbery in which the suspects allegedly used sisal ropes, a plaster knife, and chloroform to subdue their victim.
According to the police report, Mugerwa Paul and Itonge Alex, along with others still at large, are accused of robbing Dr. Wilfred of an unspecified amount of money and a smartphone. The suspects are also charged with using personal violence against Dr. Wilfred during or immediately after the robbery.
In a further twist, Kawuki Athanasius has been charged as an accessory after the fact to murder. It is alleged that he assisted Mugerwa Paul by advising him to flee to Gomba District to evade arrest and prosecution.
The suspects, whose ages range from 19 to 42 years, come from various backgrounds and professions. Okello Joel George, a 30-year-old businessman, and Okabo Joseph, a 42-year-old produce dealer, are among the older accused. Meanwhile, Kalama Steven, a 19-year-old concrete maker, and Itonge Alex, a 25-year-old student, represent the younger members of the group.
The case has sent shockwaves through Lira City, with residents expressing outrage over the violent nature of the crime. Dr. Wilfred, a respected member of the community, was known for his contributions to healthcare and education.
The police have assured the public that they are continuing their investigations and are working to apprehend the remaining suspects still at large. The case will resume on April 16, 2025, when the suspects are expected to appear in court again.
