NRM Chairpersons and Mobilizers Unanimously Back Eddy Morris Ogweng for Lira City West MP Flag Bearer

Lira City | July 1, 2025

In a major boost to his political ambitions, Eddy Morris Ogweng has secured the unanimous support of NRM chairpersons and mobilizers from Omito Ward, Amuca Ward, Barapwo Ward, and Anai Ward to become the ruling party’s flag bearer for the Lira City West Division parliamentary seat.

The endorsement came after Ogweng held a series of meetings with grassroots leaders on Monday, June 30, 2025, where he presented his vision for transforming the constituency through improved infrastructure, better education and healthcare, and stronger ties with the central government.

Ogweng, who is competing against Dr. Moses Ogonya for the NRM ticket, emphasized the need for effective leadership that can lobby for development. He criticized past leaders for failing to address key issues, including the poor state of roads in the outskirts of the city.

“It will be very bad for the people of Lira City West to send opposition MPs to Parliament who cannot connect with the government and lobby for development,"Ogweng said. “Lira should be a better city for everyone, but we have seen confusion in the lira city west council without solutions from our leaders."

Fazil Oguta, an NRM leader in Ader Cell, highlighted the stark contrast between Lira and Gulu cities, attributing Gulu’s progress to strong leadership.

“Gulu has 27km of tarmac roads because of good leadership, while Lira has lagged behind due to poor representation,"he said.

Tommy Okot from Telela B Cell pointed out internal party challenges, saying:

“What makes NRM flag bearers lose elections is lack of funds and failure to respect the party constitution. Many resort to running as independents after losing primaries, weakening the party."

Jimmy Odongo from Anai Ward urged Ogweng to remain steadfast, cautioning him against repeating past mistakes.

“Some former flag bearers abandoned campaigns after getting the NRM ticket in 2021. Eddy must stand firm and fight for this seat."

The leaders pledged to rally behind Ogweng, expressing confidence that he is the right candidate to reclaim the seat for the NRM. With his vocal advocacy and experience, they believe he can bring much-needed development and unity to Lira City West.

As the race heats up, all eyes will be on whether Ogweng can translate this grassroots momentum into a decisive victory in the NRM primaries—and ultimately, in the general election.
