Mother Arrested for Brutal Torture of 13-Year-Old Son in Lira City

Lira City, March 20, 2025– A disturbing case of child abuse has come to light in Angwet Angwet, Lira City East Division, following the circulation of a video clip on social media showing the brutal torture of a 13-year-old Primary Four pupil. The victim, a student at Elia Olet Primary School, was allegedly subjected to severe physical abuse by his biological mother, Awidi Lydia, aged 42.  


The video, which sparked widespread outrage, prompted swift action from local authorities. A case of child torture has been registered at Angwet Angwet Police Station, and the suspect, Awidi Lydia, was arrested earlier today, March 20, 2025. She is currently in police custody as investigations continue.  


According to police spokesperson PJ Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police are yet to record a detailed statement from the suspect to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident. However, he emphasized that such acts of violence against children are unacceptable and will be met with the full force of the law.  


"We strongly condemn such barbaric actions by parents or guardians. No child should ever endure such cruelty, and we are committed to ensuring that the suspect is held accountable for her actions," stated SP Okema.  


The case has ignited a wave of condemnation from the community, with many calling for stricter measures to protect children from abuse. Child rights advocates have also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of child abuse to the authorities.  


As the investigation unfolds, the police have assured the public that justice will be served. The victim is currently receiving medical and psychological support to aid his recovery from the traumatic ordeal.  


This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for collective efforts to safeguard the welfare of children and ensure that perpetrators of such heinous acts face the consequences of their actions.
