Man Arrested in Lira for Illegal Possession and Wearing of UPDF Uniform

The Territorial Police at Lira-City Central Division have launched investigations into a case of illegal possession and use of government stores, specifically UPDF uniforms, following the arrest of a 25-year-old civilian found dressed in full military combat.

The suspect, identified as Omara Bruno, was intercepted on the night of August 4th, 2025, at approximately 11:00 PM along Juba Road near Jinja Camp Cell in Barogole Ward, Lira-City West Division.

Omara, who works as a blocker at local stores in the area, claimed that the uniform was given to him earlier that day by a friend, Otim Thomas, who allegedly asked him to escort him to Angwetangwet to pick up his girlfriend. Omara told police he initially refused, citing a lack of clean clothes, but Otim reportedly convinced him to accompany him and provided him with a UPDF shirt and trousers to wear.

According to Omara’s statement, Otim also dressed in a military uniform, including a jacket, before the two proceeded to the highway and later boarded a motorcycle. However, as they travelled, a vehicle allegedly intercepted them at high speed. Two unidentified men, one armed with an AK-47 rifle, alighted. Otim reportedly fled the scene immediately, and the boda boda rider also sped off, leaving Omara behind. He was arrested and taken to Lira Army Barracks, and later transferred to the Central Police Station for further investigation.

Preliminary information suggests that Otim Thomas may have familial connections to the military, with unverified reports claiming that both his parents are serving UPDF personnel based in Bombo. This angle is currently under investigation.

“We suspect this may not be the first time these individuals have worn military attire. There have been several reported cases of robbery involving suspects impersonating security personnel in this area,” said SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police PRO.

Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend Otim Thomas, as well as verify the military status of his alleged parents. Police warn that unauthorised possession or use of military attire is a serious offence that undermines national security and public trust.

The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals impersonating security personnel or involved in related criminal activities.
