MP Linda Auma and Aspirant Abdul George Preach Political Tolerance

Agali Sub-county, Lira District — The clan head of the Ngurapuc Clan, Eng. Richard Enen Okello, has issued a strong appeal to politicians across the divide to refrain from using vulgar language and hate speech during political campaigns. Speaking during the burial of the late Rubby Owiny in Apwotic Village, Abongorwot Parish in Agali Sub-county, Eng. Okello emphasized the need for civility in politics and reminded leaders that “there is life after politics.”

He further assured the public that clan elders are ready to counsel and support any politician who loses an election, emphasizing the importance of healing and moving forward peacefully.

“There’s no need to insult each other or divide the community for political gain,” Eng. Okello stated. “Even after elections, we remain one people — living together, working together, and building together.”

Also speaking at the burial, Lira District Woman MP Linda Agness Auma advised voters not to engage in violence or hatred during election periods. She cautioned that while ordinary citizens often fight along party lines, politicians themselves tend to reconcile and cooperate after elections.

“Just today, I was on the phone with my colleague Jonathan Odur from Erute South, who is UPC,” she revealed. “We talk all the time despite belonging to different political parties. But voters fight and hate each other unnecessarily.”

Abdul George, an aspirant for the Erute South parliamentary seat on the NRM ticket, echoed similar sentiments. He appealed to the people to uphold peace and coexistence regardless of political outcomes.

“After elections, people go back to the same villages and families,” Abdul said. “It is bad for anyone to hate their neighbor over politics. Let’s promote unity.”

The messages from both cultural and political leaders come at a critical time as Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, with tensions already beginning to rise in various parts of the country. The event served as a platform for reflection and a reminder of the shared responsibility to foster peace and harmony in communities.
