MP Acen Leads Call for Girls’ Education During Belated Women’s Day in Aloi

Alebtong District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Dorcas Acen, has urged school-going girls to remain focused on their education, emphasizing that they hold the future of the nation in their hands.

Speaking during the belated International Women’s Day celebrations held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at Anara Primary School in Aloi Sub-County, Acen said education is the key to empowering girls to become leaders who will eventually take up positions of influence in society.

“Girls are the leaders and mothers of tomorrow. We want you to study hard and aim high. One day, you will be the ones replacing us in these leadership positions,” she told a crowd of excited students, teachers, and community members.

Acen expressed concern over the high rates of school dropout and poverty levels among women, noting that education is the strongest weapon to break the cycle.

In her continued support for community development, Hon. Acen extended financial aid to over 30 women’s groups, distributing more than Shs 13 million to support income-generating activities. She also donated mama kits and basins to pregnant mothers to improve maternal health in the area.

Bodaboda riders association, also benefited from the celebration, receiving reflector jackets and overalls to promote safety on the roads.

The District LC5 Chairperson, David Kennedy Odongo, commended women for their selfless contributions to family and society.

“Women should be appreciated every day—they give life, nurture families, and care for everyone,” he said.

Meanwhile, Susan Obero, the Vice Chairperson of the Alebtong Women Council, urged parents to stay united for the well-being of their children. “Even when disagreements arise, parents should find ways to stay together and raise their children in a stable environment,” she advised.

The event was marked with traditional dances, speeches, and a strong message of unity, empowerment, and education for girls and women in Alebtong.
