Lira, May 3, 2025 – Eddy Morris Ogweng, a prospective contender for the Lira City West MP seat, has advised university students against shunning any form of work after graduation, emphasizing the need for self-reliance amidst limited job opportunities.
Ogweng made the remarks during the handover ceremony of the Lango Students Association (LASA) leadership at Planet Lounge on Saturday. He noted that with thousands of graduates entering the job market yearly, youth must be willing to take up any available opportunities rather than waiting for white-collar jobs.
“The job market is competitive, and opportunities are few. When you finish university, do not look down on any work. Whether it’s farming, small business, or vocational skills, every job is valuable,"he said.
Ogweng also urged young people to take up leadership roles early to shape Uganda’s future. He commended the NRM government for establishing Lira University but called on students to be good ambassadors to attract more learners from the Lango sub-region.
George Angoli, the Arak-Ober Clan Head representing the Lango Cultural Institution, advised female students to prioritize education over relationships.
“Young women, focus on your studies first. A good education will lead you to a better future, including finding a respectable husband after your studies,"he said.
The outgoing LASA chief advisor, Geoffrey Abuka, thanked Ogweng and Angoli for gracing the event and rallied the youth to support visionary leaders.
The newly elected LASA leaders, Mark Okwir (Chairperson) and Monica Auma (Female Leader), pledged to unite students and advocate for their welfare.
The ceremony concluded with calls for youth empowerment, education focus, and active participation in leadership to drive development in Lango and beyond.
