Apac, Uganda – September 27, 2025 – Leaders of Legacy College Apac have called for calm and assured the public of student safety following a lightning strike that hit a forested area behind the school on Friday evening.
According to reports, the incident occurred between 8:00 and 9:00 PM, when a bolt of lightning struck a tree near the school compound. The loud sound caused panic among students, some of whom ran in fear, thinking the strike was closer or more dangerous than it was.
Seven students were rushed to Apac Hospital for medical observation. However, Mr. Eddy Morris Ogweng, Chairperson of the Board of Directors at Legacy College Apac, confirmed that all students are in stable condition.
“Out of the seven students taken to the hospital, three were found to be suffering from panic attacks triggered by the loud sound of the lightning,” Mr. Ogweng said. “We thank the medical team at Apac Hospital for their quick and professional response in treating our students.”
He also noted that the presence of functional lightning arresters on campus significantly minimized potential damage.
“The lightning could have caused more harm, but thanks to the installation of lightning arresters, the impact was contained,” he added.
Mr. Ogweng urged parents and guardians to remain calm and trust that the school is taking all necessary precautions to ensure student safety.
“We understand that such incidents can be frightening, but we assure parents that their children are safe. Our systems are in place, and we are committed to their wellbeing,” he said.
The school has also announced that counseling support will be available for students who may still be emotionally affected by the incident.
