Aboke, Uganda – Kole North Member of Parliament, Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti, has officially announced his defection from being an independent legislator to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Dr. Opio, who was elected as an Independent in the 2021 general elections, made the declaration yesterday while addressing party leaders and supporters at the NRM offices in Aboke. He confirmed that he will seek re-election in 2026 under the NRM ticket.
The lawmaker attributed his decision to the NRM’s "good leadership" and its commitment to fostering development across the country. He specifically highlighted key government projects in Kole District and Lango Sub-region, including the tarmacking of the Lira-Kamdini road, the construction of Akii-Bua Stadium, the improvement of health centers, and the recent provision of ambulances to Kole District.
“I have seen the vision of NRM in transforming Uganda, and I want to be part of that progress,"Dr. Opio said.
“The party has demonstrated its commitment to development, and I believe that by joining NRM, I can better serve the people of Kole North."
Local NRM leaders welcomed Dr. Opio’s move, describing it as a boost for the party’s strength in the region. The NRM Registrar is expected to officially enroll him as a member in the coming days.
Political analysts suggest that Dr. Opio’s defection could reshape the dynamics in Kole District ahead of the 2026 elections, as he now seeks to leverage the NRM’s structures to retain his seat.
With this latest addition, the NRM continues to consolidate its influence in Northern Uganda, further strengthening its position as the country’s dominant political force.
