In a recent public notice issued on 15th March 2025, the Ministry of Works & Transport of the Republic of Uganda announced an extension to the closure of Karuma and Ayago Bridges on the Karuma—Olwiyo Road. The closure, initially set to end soon, has been extended to Monday, 24th March 2025, to allow for the completion of critical repairs on the Masindi Port Ferry, a key alternative route for motorists.
The Ministry is undertaking the installation of expansion joints on the bridges, a necessary maintenance activity to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of these vital transport links. During this period, both Karuma and Ayago Bridges will remain inaccessible to all traffic.
The bridges are now scheduled to reopen on Monday, 14th April 2025. The Ministry has provided alternative routes to minimize disruption to travelers:
1. To Kampala - Gulu/West Nile:Motorists are advised to use the route via Luwero - Kafu - Masindi - Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park) - Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo (and vice versa).
2. To Kampala - Lira:The recommended route is via Iganga - Nakalama - Tirinyi - Pallisa - Kumi - Soroti - Lira (and vice versa).
Bageya Waiswa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works & Transport, expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the extended closure and thanked the public for their patience and cooperation. "We understand the challenges these closures may pose and are committed to completing the repairs as swiftly as possible to restore normal traffic flow," he stated.
The Ministry remains dedicated to providing reliable and safe transport infrastructure and services, ensuring the safety and convenience of all road users. Further updates will be communicated as the project progresses.
