Imposter Posing as Medical Officer Nabbed at Lira Regional Referral Hospital After Extorting Money for Surgery

LIRA CITY – The security team at Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH), in conjunction with the Uganda Police Force, has arrested a man accused of impersonating a doctor to defraud a patient’s relative.

The suspect, identified as Okello Moses, was apprehended on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at approximately 10:00 AM from the female surgical ward. According to hospital authorities, Okello allegedly swindled a caregiver out of UGX 200,000 by promising to expedite a surgical procedure.

Hospital authorities on their X account confirmed that the suspect approached the unsuspecting caregiver posing as a Medical Officer. Okello demanded a total of UGX 500,000, claiming the money was required to facilitate a "quick medical procedure" for the patient. He reportedly insisted on an immediate deposit of UGX 200,000 before he would attend to the patient, with the balance to be paid later.

Suspecting foul play, the vigilant caregiver reported the incident to the hospital’s security detail. Security operatives quickly alerted the police and set up a sting operation. Okello was arrested red-handed immediately after receiving the cash from the victim.

The case has been officially registered at Lira City Central Police Station under reference number 32/26/02/2026. The suspect faces charges of theft of cash and impersonation.

"The Management would like to inform the public that within the month of February 2026 alone, we have arrested more than five people under similar circumstances," the hospital stated, highlighting a worrying trend of criminals targeting vulnerable patients and their families.

Hospital administrators have reassured the public that security has been intensified, with a 24-hour alert system now supplemented by CCTV surveillance to protect patients, staff, and visitors.

"We shall collaborate with the Police and render all necessary support to ensure that justice is served," the management added. "Please report such cases to the Hospital authorities from time to time as we make Lira Regional Referral Hospital better for ALL."
