As the National Resistance Movement (NRM) kicks off nominations for its internal party structures, political temperatures are rising in Lira City where a fierce contest is brewing between veteran politicians, grassroots mobilizers, and wealthy business tycoons. The race for key positions in the NRM Lira City executive is shaping into a litmus test for party loyalty and leadership ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Health Minister Dr. Aceng Joins the Fray
Leading the contest is Health Minister and incumbent Woman MP for Lira City, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, who has declared her bid for the NRM Lira City Chairperson position. Dr. Aceng’s camp is banking on her track record in health, education, and infrastructure to rally support.
In a passionate appeal, Dr. Aceng warned against political double-dealing within the party ranks.
“What I see currently is a picture that discourages people from joining NRM. Some members have one leg in NRM and one leg in opposition—they don’t lead by example,” she said. “As a true cadre groomed by this party, I am stepping forward to restore NRM’s true vision in Lira City.”
Geoffrey Etwop: The Challenger with Grassroots Might
Standing in her way is Geoffrey Etwop, the current NRM Lira District Treasurer. Etwop is a controversial figure within party circles, having supported independent candidates in the 2021 elections. While his commitment to the party is under scrutiny, his influence at the grassroots level cannot be underestimated.
General Secretary Race: Ogweng vs. Ongom
The battle for NRM Lira City General Secretary is no less competitive. Eddy Morris Ogweng, a respected NRM cadre and aspiring MP for Lira City West Division, is seen as a strong candidate, with many citing his ideological clarity and long-standing loyalty to the party.
He faces off with Morris Chris Ongom, igniting what is expected to be a tense and closely-watched race.
PC for Treasurer: Business Meets Politics
For the position of NRM Lira City Treasurer, only one name has emerged so far—Okello Denis Potcwao (PC). A successful businessman known for financing party activities across the Lango sub-region, PC is widely viewed as the frontrunner due to his financial acumen and influence.
“The treasurer role is not for amateurs—it requires experience, and PC ticks all the boxes,” said a party insider
More Businessmen Join the Race
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Ocol Johnson Patel, another influential businessman, is eyeing the NRM Lira City Vice Chairperson position. His possible entry would further intensify competition within the city’s business and political elite.
Another entrepreneur, Eryau Geoffrey Ojore, is said to be considering a bid for NRM Lira City Vice Chairperson for the Elderly.
Lira City Speaker Patrick Okwir has declared his interest in leading the Workers League under the NRM city structure.
Alfred Ayena Eyul also has come out to express his interest
With nominations now underway, Lira City is witnessing a political shakeup that could redefine the NRM’s local leadership and set the stage for the 2026 elections.
