Game Changer: Major Opio Names Ogwang Obua as Campaign Lead for Erute North Race

Lira, Uganda – Retired army officer and aspiring Erute North MP, Major Emmy Johnson Opio, has taken a major strategic step ahead of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries by appointing Mr. Ogwang Obua Moses, the current NRM Publicity Secretary for Lira District, as his Political Assistant.

The announcement was made on Saturday morning through a message shared by Major Opio to his campaign team and supporters.

“Good morning Family. This is to confirm the appointment of one Mr. Ogwang Obua Moses (NRM Publicity Sec - Lira) as my Political Assistant. Appointment takes immediate effect,” the message read.

Ogwang hails from Ayami Sub-county and is widely respected across Lango sub-region for his unmatched mobilization skills and grassroots connections. His entry into Major Opio’s campaign is seen by political analysts as a significant boost to the retired soldier’s chances in the increasingly competitive NRM primary race.

Observers say this move positions Major Opio ahead of his rivals, some of whom have reportedly resorted to distributing bars of soap and small cash handouts of Shs 2,000 in a bid to sway voters—a practice that has sparked concern among local NRM faithful.

Sources within Opio’s camp expressed confidence that Ogwang’s experience and popularity will consolidate support in key areas, particularly among the youth and grassroots voters.

“Ogwang is not just a mobilizer; he understands the party structures and voter psychology,” said a campaign insider. “With him on board, we are now more than ready for the 16th July NRM primaries.”

Major Opio, who is contesting against several notable figures including incumbent MP Christine Akello and others, has consistently campaigned on a message of discipline, service, and restoring dignity to Erute North.

As the campaign season heats up, the latest appointment signals a well-organized and calculated push by the retired Major to clinch the NRM flag and eventually represent Erute North in Parliament.
