Lira District — In a strong show of unity and determination, National Resistance Movement (NRM) delegates from Erute North, comprising mainstream representatives and special interest groups, have overwhelmingly declared their support for Hon. Linda Agnes Auma and Mr. Abdul George in the upcoming district party elections scheduled for Friday, May 23, 2025.
The delegates, drawn from Ogur Sub County, Agweng Sub County, Agweng Town Council, Ayami Sub County, and Aromo, voiced their backing during a strategic mobilization meeting. The gathering comes ahead of the pivotal vote to elect the NRM District Chairperson, a position currently contested by Hon. Auma, the Lira District Woman Member of Parliament.
Addressing the delegates, Auma laid out her bold vision for reviving and restructuring the party in Lira. “For too long, NRM supporters have appeared neglected and impoverished, despite being part of the ruling party. We have lacked inclusive leadership focused on empowering the grassroots,” she stated.
She criticized the absence of internal party engagements since 2020, saying this vacuum has allowed opposition parties to make significant inroads in traditional NRM strongholds. To counter this, Auma pledged to secure land and establish a dedicated NRM office in Lira District—separate from the city’s administrative setup. She committed to using her personal resources and lobbying capabilities to strengthen sub-county structures and build a model district administration.
Auma also encouraged the formation of SACCOs and community groups to better access targeted poverty-alleviation programs. “The time has come for delegates and NRM supporters to benefit directly from government interventions,” she urged.
In support, Abdul George, a contender for the position of NRM District Vice Chairperson, emphasized the need for youthful, visionary leadership. He pointed to the loss of NRM seats in Erute South to Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) as a warning sign.
“We cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past. A party grows through innovation and inclusion,” he said, revealing his longer-term ambition to reclaim Erute South as Member of Parliament.
With elections drawing near, the atmosphere in Lira District is charged with anticipation. Delegates have expressed optimism in Auma’s and Abdul’s leadership, believing it could mark a turning point for the NRM’s grassroots revival.
Voting will take place at the Lira District Headquarters in Ogur, with many observers predicting a decisive win for Auma.
