LIRA CITY – February 4, 2026 – A 28-year-old painter, Awio Daniel, has died following a tragic road traffic crash at a construction site in Jinja Camp, Lira City West Division, on Wednesday morning. The incident, which involved a Sino truck and a pedal cyclist, has prompted a police appeal for road discipline.
According to a statement released by North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 9:00 a.m. at a section of road where traffic flow was being manually controlled by a flagman.
Preliminary investigations indicate that both a grey Sino truck, registration UBP 495L / TUA 293AA, and Awio Daniel on his bicycle were travelling from the Kamdini direction towards Lira City. They were stopped at the construction zone to allow oncoming traffic to pass.
Tragedy struck immediately after the flagman signaled the Kamdini-bound queue to proceed. "Motorists heading towards Lira City reportedly began overtaking recklessly," SP Okema stated in the release.
In the ensuing chaos, it is alleged that an unidentified motorcycle knocked the pedal cyclist, Awio Daniel, causing him to fall into the path of the moving Sino truck. The rear tyres of the truck’s trailer then ran over him.
Awio Daniel, a resident of Amuca Cells in Lira City West Division, was rushed to the nearby Charis Health Facility at Jinja Camp but was pronounced dead.
The scene of the accident was documented by police officers from Lira City West Division. Both the Sino truck and the bicycle have been towed and impounded at the division pending a formal Inspection of Vehicles (IOV). Authorities are actively searching for the unidentified motorcycle and its rider, who fled the scene.
"The Territorial Police in Lira City West Division are investigating this fatal road traffic crash," the statement confirmed.
SP Okema termed the incident "very unfortunate" and used the opportunity to issue a stern appeal to all road users. "We appeal to motorists to always respect road safety rules and regulations to avoid such road carnage," he urged.
Inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
