Lira, June 25, 2025 — As the National Resistance Movement (NRM) gears up for its internal party primaries scheduled for July 16, the contest for the Erute North parliamentary flag is heating up. Among the six candidates in the race, Major (Rtd) Emmy Johnson Opio has emerged as the frontrunner, gaining significant support across the constituency.
The contest pits Major Opio against notable figures including the incumbent Member of Parliament Christine Akello, Patrick Ongom Aregedeng, Ogwang Paul, and Warrant Officer Jimmy Ebong. Yet, with less than a month to go, Major Opio is commanding the spotlight.
Several factors have propelled him to the top of the race. His recent initiative to distribute cocoa seedlings and promote cocoa farming has struck a chord with the grassroots. In a region still searching for viable cash crops, his push for cocoa is being hailed as both timely and visionary.
“Major Opio’s cocoa campaign is more than just agriculture—it’s economic liberation for our youth and farmers,” said David Otim, a resident of Ogur.
Beyond agriculture, Major Opio is earning the trust of voters due to his past service as a senior officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). His military background symbolizes discipline, patriotism, and a track record of service—qualities voters say are lacking in some of his opponents.
Transparency is another cornerstone of his growing popularity. Local leaders and community members praise him for open consultations and honesty in his engagements—unlike what they describe as “politics as usual.”
“He speaks straight, and he means what he says. That’s why we believe in him,” said Nancy Acan, youth from Ayami.
Moreover, Major Opio’s vast network within government circles is being seen as a potential bridge for development projects to flow into Erute North. Residents believe that if elected, his connections will translate into better roads, schools, and healthcare for the area.
Recent internal surveys indicate his growing lead:
• 80% support in Ogur Sub-county
• 60% in Aromo Sub-county
• 59% in Ayami Sub-county
• 40% in Agweng Sub-county and Agweng Town Council
With these figures, observers say Major Opio is poised to win the NRM flag and potentially reclaim the Erute North seat in the general elections.
As the July 16 date approaches, all eyes remain fixed on Erute North, where cocoa, character, and connections are shaping the battle for political leadership.
