Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga has commended the establishment of Victoria School of Nursing and Midwifery–Lira, describing it as a timely investment in Uganda’s health sector.
Speaking when meeting a delegation from the school, Mayiga emphasized that a nation’s social and economic transformation depends heavily on the health of its people. He noted that while Uganda has seen increased investment in primary and secondary education, schools that train professional health workers remain few yet are crucial.
“In all we do, and all we aspire to achieve, depends on one’s state of health. That’s why healthcare providers are very significant for the social and economic transformation of any country. But we need to have professional health care givers who understand that providing health care is a calling,” Mayiga said.
The Prime Minister applauded the school’s motto, “Building Reliable Workforce for Health,” adding that the Buganda Kingdom welcomes partnerships that promote professional health training.
Dr. Isaac Orec, the Director of Victoria School of Nursing and Midwifery, said the institution is seeking collaboration with Buganda Kingdom to make healthcare education more accessible. He revealed that the proposed partnership includes offering scholarships to at least 50 students from the Kingdom over the next five years.
In response, Mayiga advised Dr. Orec to draft formal proposals to be reviewed through the Kingdom’s procedures, assuring that the matter would be given due consideration.
The development marks a step towards strengthening ties between Buganda Kingdom and institutions committed to improving Uganda’s health sector.
