LIRA CITY – The Gender, Labour and Social Development Minister, Betty Amongi, has launched a sweeping series of campaign promises for Lira City, headlined by a direct cash pledge of one million shillings to every women's group in the constituency.
Campaigning in Boroboro and Angwetangwet on Tuesday, the UPC flag bearer for Woman MP outlined an ambitious development agenda. She stated that the direct funding for women's groups is intended to empower members and stimulate local enterprise.
Beyond the direct grants, Amongi promised a revolutionary loan scheme for the general populace, with a heavily subsidized interest rate of just 10 percent per annum. She specifically targeted the youth with an even more favorable offer, pledging a loan facility with a mere 5 percent annual interest rate.
"I will work on our bad roads and lead the fight against poverty in our community," Amongi told supporters, broadening her pledges to include infrastructure and economic welfare. On agriculture, she promised to provide seeds at fair prices and introduce a cost-sharing model for farmers seeking bulky seeds, aiming to support modern farming practices in Lira City.
Meanwhile, the UPC flag bearer for Lira City East Division, James Ocen, popularly known as Agipi, presented himself as the candidate for integrity and effective representation.
Agipi committed to delivering "the best leadership," positioning himself as the ideal person to lead the division. He took a strong stance against corruption, citing the persistently poor road network in Lira City as a key example.
"Every year, the government is giving one billion shillings, but this money is swindled," Agipi alleged, promising to hold officials accountable. He concluded by asserting that he is the only candidate who can effectively improve health services, boost household income, and provide quality representation in Parliament.
The twin campaigns highlight a focus on grassroots economic empowerment and anti-corruption as key pillars for the upcoming elections in Lira City.
