Agweng Priest Rev.Richard Omara Promotes Cocoa Farming, Urges Church Leaders to Grow for Self-Reliance

Lango, Uganda – Rev. Richard Omara, the parish priest of Agweng, has called on religious leaders to embrace cocoa farming as a sustainable way to secure their financial future and set an example for their congregations.

Speaking to Karumapost on Saturday, Rev. Omara revealed that he was inspired by retired Major Emmy Johnson Opio—a 2026 parliamentary aspirant for Erute North—who taught him the economic benefits of cocoa farming.

The clergyman disclosed that he has already planted 180 cocoa trees alongside his 250-banana plantation. Now, he plans to expand cocoa farming by planting 200 more trees on church land.

“Men of God must lead by example," Rev. Omara said. "If we grow cocoa, our communities will follow, and together we can fight poverty."

He emphasized that cocoa farming could provide long-term financial stability for church leaders after retirement, helping them avoid dependency on congregational support.

“When men of God plant cocoa, they won’t have to beg from Christians. They can pay school fees and live dignified lives," he added.

Major Opio’s push for cocoa as a cash crop in Lango is steadily gaining popularity, with more locals recognizing its economic potential. Rev. Omara’s initiative further strengthens this campaign, positioning cocoa as a viable alternative to traditional crops.

As more religious and community leaders adopt the practice, cocoa farming could soon transform Lango’s agricultural landscape—turning clergy into entrepreneurs and inspiring entire congregations to follow suit.
