2026 Elections: Major Opio Urges Voters to Choose Competence Over Handouts

Erute North, Uganda – Retired Major Emmy Johnson Opio,a hopeful for the Erute North MP seat in 2026,has cautioned voters against being swayed by politicians who distribute gifts like money, salt, and other items to buy votes.

Speaking during a farmers’ training session in Aromo Sub-County,where he taught locals modern techniques for growing cocoa and coffee

Major Opio emphasized that while voters may accept such gifts, they should vote based on competence, not handouts.

“Many politicians will come with money, salt, and other things to lure you, but I urge you—take what they give, but when voting, choose a bright and capable leader," Opio said.

He stressed that  2026 should be the year voters elect leaders based on merit, not wealth or short-term benefits. “Leadership is about vision and service, not just who has the most money to give,"he added.

Joe Odyek, the Aromo Trading Center Chairperson and a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP),echoed Opio’s sentiments, encouraging farmers to invest in cash crops like cocoa and coffee to improve their livelihoods.

“We must focus on sustainable development, not just politics. Planting cocoa and coffee will bring long-term benefits,"Odyek said.

Major Opio’s message has resonated with locals, many of whom expressed frustration with leaders who only appear during election seasons with handouts but fail to deliver on promises.

As the 2026 elections approach,Opio’s call for issue-based politics and self-reliance through agriculture-is gaining traction, setting the stage for a competitive race in Erute North.
